Final Exam- Distance Learning

After taking this class my opinions have changed towards women in sport. I learned a lot from this class and some of the readings were shocking because I started to realize that many things are overlooked in female sports. I never knew or experienced the discrimination that they had and still have to deal with. I thought that they were treated equally in the sports arena. After having more knowledge about Title IX and knowing how far women have come, it is sad to know that they are still not been treated equally. Now, I am more aware of the challenges that they continue to face just to be part of a team and to receive equality. However, I hope that society will become aware of this so that one day we can say that women and men receive equal treatment in the sports arena.

I used to think women received equal coverage in sports magazines. However, after choosing to do the media critique for our awareness assignment the doing my awareness assignment, I found out many things. I noticed that most of the female athletes that made it to the cover pages were well-known and were not always wearing their uniform. For many of the cover pages, it was difficult to know if they were athletes and what sport they played. If it would not have been because the pictures were from sports magazines, one would not be able to identify the females as athletes. It is extremely difficult for female athletes to appear in the cover pages while men are given that opportunity. It is easier and it is seen that more males appear in cover pages than women when it should be equal.
